Tolman was praised for her performance as Minnesota policeman Molly Solverson, with Vanity Fair writing the following "calmly and undoubtedly stole the entire film". Tolman was cast in an episode of guest-starring as romance novelist Abby Berman on The Mindy Program the same year. Her breakout performance in the film as Fargo caused her to drop various supporting roles, such as mother roles, best friends and wives. Tolman was searching for more unconventional roles. In 2017, Tolman starred in ABC's Downward Dog, based on the Animal Media Group web series that was cancelled after one season. Tolman was a part of the ABC drama, Emergence. It premiered on on September 24, 2019, but ended the show after just one season in May 2021. Despite the fact that Tolman tweeted that it received "pretty excellent" ratings. She has also appeared as a guest on NBC's Good Girls.
